Creating Understanding In Math (Part 2)

My Students

If the best way to learn is by doing, shouldn't my students have the chance to touch, move and create the math they're playing with?

In my classroom, my students teach each other on a daily basis.

I teach ninth grade algebra and geometry in a low-income urban school in Massachusetts. For the most part, they come into school unprepared and convinced they hate math--I make it my mission in life to convince them otherwise, and I use every bit of stubbornness I possess and every tool at my disposal to do so.

My Project

One of the things my students are lacking in a low-income, urban school is a collection of hands-on resources and manipulatives that they might have access to in another school setting. The resources you're providing my students with will help them make sense of math in a very real way. With a mixture of hands-on measuring tools, games, and boards to take the focus off the traditional sage on a stage approach to learning, you are helping place the power of learning in the hands of my students.

With your help, I'll be able to put these powerful resources into the hands of my students and continue the process of increasing my students confidence, and developing their thinking skills to help them become the mathematicians I see inside them.
