Creating the Perfect Nook to Read a Book

Help me give my students a comfortable, private space in the classroom to snuggle up with a great book, as they are given the opportunity to experience the joy of reading simply for the pleasure of it.

My Students

My students are high school level English Second Language students who are newer to speaking, reading, and writing English. Like all students who are new to the notion that people can actually derive pleasure from reading a great book, by creating a comfortable and inviting reading nook in my classroom, it will give my students a serene space to read and comprehend written text in order to foster their love of reading.

My Project

To help students become successful readers, a classroom reading nook needs to be quiet and comfortable enough for them to get absorbed in reading. Unfortunately, the only options for seating in the traditional classroom setting are institutional-style hard backed chairs or the cold, hard floor; neither of which are even the slightest bit comfortable! I hope you will help me to create a cozy reading nook in my classroom for students to retreat to and curl up with a good book. This will be a peaceful spot in my classroom for students to develop their love of literature. But this reading nook won’t be just for reading! The nook will be a great space for independent writing, as well as an inviting setting for writing workshops and Socratic seminars.
