My day is full of questions. And not the easy ones. My students ask things like, "How much does the Earth weigh?"
And most of the time I answer, "I don't know, let's look it up."
They are knowledge sponges. Technology is the best way to give them the access to information in order to develop ideas.
There is a quote usually attributed to someone from Apple titled, "The Crazy Ones." It describes my students and they way they think perfectly.
"They invent. They imagine. They heal. They explore. They create. They inspire. They push the human race forward. We see genius. Because the people who are crazy enough to think they can change the world, are the ones who do".
My students range from 1st to 5th grade and are gifted/talented students. They are a great group to teach and inspire me as a teacher to always do the best for them-supply what they need to become the leaders of tomorrow.
Our school is a quaint neighborhood school in a small Texas city. We are surrounded by houses and many students walk to school. We also are home to a 2 Way Immersion program. Students learn Spanish and English while learning grade level information. We also have a bilingual program within the school. My students come from the regular program classrooms as well as these other 2 programs.
My Project
With a tablet, a student has access to the world. They can find answers to all their questions. And, with guidance, will learn how to filter out valid information and transform information into new ideas.
With a tablet,I can make learning more hands-on, interactive, and customized for each student. I can develop my own interactive lessons, videos, apps, etc. at multiple levels that can be used at home or in school.
We are beginning a unit on medicine and human body systems. I have a student very interested in the immune system and diseases associated with it. He wants to find treatments and cures-maybe even come up with his own medical breakthrough. He wants to research what is known, file the information he finds, put it together in a multimedia project that he can share with experts in the field. This is not possible with the 1995 World Book Encyclopedias we have in the room. He (we) need access to the latest knowledge and a way to share our knowledge with others.
Donations toward an iPad for my classroom will be one step toward being able to make sure my students reach their full potential and have all the information they need to become the leaders of tomorrow.
My ultimate goal is to be able to get an iPad for every student and a way to project their multimedia presentations on a TV or through a projector. My students have amazing ideas and I want them shared with each other and with people outside my classroom-specialists in fields of study.
