it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
I teach Capoeira an Afro-Brazilian martial art created by the African slaves brought to Brazil about 500 years ago. Music is a major aspect in Capoeira because it creates the "AXE" or energy that enables Capoeira to be played.
Capoeira combines both physical and musical elements that when intertwined create a art, community and confidence.
For almost all of my students, this is the first time they have ever seen or experienced Capoeira. They have participated in many of the cooperative learning sequences and movement drills. Now, I would like to introduce them to the power of the musical elements of Capoeira.
My Project
The students in my Capoeira class have grown so much since I started teaching it this Fall. Many of the students play Capoeira in the "roda" (the circle in which people play Capoeira),sing in Portuguese and can explain the history of Capoeira. The students always have fun and are very excited to learn more about the art form.
Learning how to play some of the musical instruments will expose students to the importance of music in Capoeira . It will help students learn how to take leadership positions because it the music that creates Capoeira roda. Learning how to play the musical instruments empowers the students to create their own energy "Axe" for "roda".
My intention for exposing students to the musical aspect in Capoeira is to help students take ownership of their own learning and inspire them to learn how to play the other instruments that are part of the Capoeira orchestra.
