My students need more storage space in the classroom so they are able to independently manage their supplies in our classroom and stools for flexible seating.
My students are Chinese-speaking newcomers, mainly from China, and sometimes from other countries. They come to our school for about one year before they transition to another school within our district. All of the students are on free and reduced-price lunch.
My students move here to the United States and have to adjust to a whole new lifestyle, a new country, a new city, a new home, and most of the time, a change in their family makeup.
They sometimes only come to the United States with one parent.
We teach them foundational English language skills, along with social and emotional development. We also focus on student-centered learning, where we focus on collaborative projects and guide students to work together and learn. This is a shift from teacher-centered learning, which can be a difficult transition for students.
My Project
I want to build independence with my students. The cabinets and stacking drawers will be for their classroom supplies so that when students need them, they will be able to access it on their own. They need to feel that the supplies are for the students to use, and they need to take care of them.
I want them to learn how to self-manage and feel more ownership in the classroom.
I also want the students to have more flexible seating for small group work so that they can make choices about where they would like to sit in the classroom. The ownership and choices they can make in the classroom will help them gain the confidence they need to be successful learners.
