Creating Student Designed Theater Productions!

Help me give my students journals, markers, and other items for the ability to create scenery and props for our productions this year!

My Project

Drama is one of the most popular electives at our Title 1 school and students come back every year to visit and mentor. Many go on to attend magnet schools for theater and theater tech. I want the students to have every opportunity to explore the various parts of theater. We are excited to use these supplies to create models/designs and create props and scenery for our Drama productions. Last year, the students created 99% of all the costumes, scenery and props for our productions.

Students will use the water colors and papers to make vivid costume designs for our upcoming productions.

Students will build models of scenery and props to scale using the markers, colored pencils, glue, colored paper, scissors and popsicle sticks and create props and backdrop 3D effects. Students will attach scenery parts we create to the walls using staple guns. Other students will work on designing posters and publicity materials to advertise our shows. Our students cannot afford to purchase their own set of any of these materials and I want to be able to provide them in the classroom setting, as well as when we meet after school to have as many students as possible involved in all aspects of theater.

Technical Theater and Drama can be used in so many aspects of these students lives!

They both teach effective teamwork, public speaking and presenting and creating models and performances.

This will be my 29th year teaching and we are one of the few middle schools in the state to offer Drama and Technical Theater as classes. We plan on four major productions this year, along with a showcase night of our Technical Theater portfolios and acting projects. We will also attend competitions where we can showcase the students’ design and acting talents!
