My Students

Can you imagine not having the vocabulary you yearn for to engage in rich and meaningful conversations?

My students are incredibly hard-working, second language learners living in rural Washington State and attending a school with limited resources.

Most of my students are Hispanic and have Spanish, Mixteco and/or Aguacateco as their first language. They attend school regularly even though most of them work daily in the fields or on dairy farms to contribute to family income. My students take nothing for granted. They and their parents place a high value on education and they all plan to graduate and attend post-secondary institutions.

My Project

Our poor but vibrant school is constantly struggling to get the materials we need. My students are eager readers and always have a book in hand. It was not until my students moved to the United States that they read for pleasure. Having these Scholastic magazines will add a whole new dimension to their reading! Have you read the Choices Magazine? They are full of high interest material for this age group. The students absorb the the academic vocabulary necessary to discuss and write about these hot topics. There are so many educational and life lessons to discuss in these attractive, thin magazines. Students will be able to write in these and make these their own, by taking them home and sharing them with relatives. Also, the anticipation of a new magazine every month is so exciting!

I have always wanted to offer these magazines to my students.

Up to now we have enjoyed the recycled magazines. We appreciate them but the activities have already been completed and some photos have been cut out. These magazines will offer the possibility to my students to learn new vocabulary that is relevant to current topics and keep updated on new trends and current thoughts. It is a wonderful magazine that will provide endless educational opportunities! Please consider our proposal! Thank you!
