Creating STEAM Through Art and Legos in the Art Room

My students need legos in the art room to experiment with challenges created through art, architecture, mosaics, and other artistic avenues!

My Students

Everyone has snapped a Lego together at some point in time! As I continue to work in the elementary level, I realize how important experimentation is not only in the science classrooms throughout the school, but also in my art room!

I have brilliant students!

They are full of stories, ideas, and creativity! They can relate to Legos because there is a connection to it. They use them at home. They have friends with them. There are now movies and games based after them! But, do they see these as toys or art? What they are really making could be part of their own story--part of their own life and learning through the arts.

My Project

Putting a new material into my students' hands as an ART material opens up a new idea for them. For very young aged children, Lego creates Duplo big blocks. It gives children, even with no voice yet, the opportunity to create. Many times those children play with those Lego blocks before they even hold a crayon or paintbrush. The most basic of shapes can be turned into an amazing piece of artworks. I would like to give them that opportunity. I would like to start our class Lego collection with this donation to open the door to new creative opportunities for my students to create 3D sculptures, mosaics, murals, and possibly moving objects in the future!

There is nothing you can't make with Legos!

There is a Lego art movement with artists who are using Legos to create sculptures and "paintings". It opens up the possibility for future artists to expand their experiences beyond paper and crayons. It gives them opportunities to practice with and create 3D artistic representations of things they can only dream of in their heads. Go ahead, ask a child what they are building! I guarantee you will be placed into another world with their answers!
