Creating Routine in Our ELL Classroom!

My Students

Imagine leaving behind everything you know and love to live in a new place, with new languages, new cultures, and new people. This is often the experience of students in my classroom. My ELL students come from countries across the world and all carry different stories that they express in a multitude of languages. In our classroom, we are learning English while valuing the rich knowledge that we all bring from our varied life experiences.

My students are resilient, vivacious, and curious and are making strides everyday to not only learn English, but to access content classes in a new language.

The vast majority of my students are economically disadvantaged. Though my students face numerous obstacles inside and outside of the classroom, they come ready to learn and eager to reach the potential that they all have within them. They are some of the most caring, inspiring, and generous people you could ever meet.

My Project

Students have been out of school for over one year and a half and I am so glad to have them back in the classroom. It is evident that there has been an impact from so much time out of the classroom. I am looking to create routines and structure in our classroom. This includes providing students with a place to step away from their phones and charge their devices. Also, a laminated to do list will be put on students desks. Everyday they will come in write down what they need to do in class and be empowered to check off what they have completed. Who doesn't love checklists? These to do lists will also help students executive functioning skills by planning, prioritizing, and organizing what they will be doing in class each day.

Structure in the classroom allows students to feel at ease knowing the tasks they will be doing each day and what to expect, along with a way for me as a teacher to gauge student's progress in each class.

Dry erase markers, erasers, and string will allow me to create stations on each desk for students to take control of their learning. Phone chargers and a phone holder will allow students to leave their devices in a secure place and truly focus on what is happening in the classroom.
