Help me give my students these primary writing journals that have adequate, developmentally appropriate writing spaces for first graders. They also have a dedicated space to draw a picture to enhance their writing.
Our first grade classes consists of an average of twenty-seven students with a wide range of academic abilities. We have several students with special needs, as well as those that qualify as gifted. We celebrate each students' abilities and teach kindness and collaboration in our classroom. Our school is a national certified STEM school. We have received the A+ School of Excellence distinction three consecutive times.
To help meet the wide range of academic needs in our class, we have adopted the Lucy Calkins Writers Workshop program.
This program fosters the love of writing by learning about different genres of writing and teaching students techniques to write a small moment narrative, a review and a teaching story.
My Project
Our school wide focus for the last two years has been to increase our scores in writing. We feel that the foundations for writing really start in first grade.
We want to build confident students who have a passion for writing.
We have been doing this through the Lucy Calkins Writers Workshop program. This program is designed to teach students about writing a personal narrative about a small moment that happened in their life. We have taught them several techniques about adding details, voice and feeling to their stories. We have reviewed several mentor texts to model examples of what good writing looks like.
These primary writing journals provide adequate space, with developmentally appropriate lines for our students to write on. It also provides a dedicated space for students to draw a picture. Currently we are just using regular compositions books which do not provide the appropriate lines to teach proper writing techniques.
