My Students

The children are predominately African-American youth aged 3-4 years old. Most of the children come to school well groomed, healthy, and with their basic needs of life met. As their teacher, I see energetic students who are happy to be in the classroom and eager to learn and explore. They are curious learners who find creative ways to purpose the few resources that are in the learning environment. They take pride in their accomplishments and they are thirsty to learn and discover the world around them. Our elementary school is a small Chicago Public School that is located in an economically depressed area on the south side of Chicago. The students are at risk due to a myriad of economic and social impacts. The school is a level 2-plus tiered school that works hard to provide the students with the resources that are needed to all of students that attend. Unfortunately, the school is hampered by the environmental impacts of safety.

My Project

The books will provide core language and math skills such as counting, measuring, positional words and vocabulary that are designed to foster cognitive development. The students will be able to recognize letters, vowel sounds and at least fifty sight words. These requested materials will also provide my students the core skills to compare and contrast objects, recognize and write sight words and sentences, and recite a simple poem from memory. In addition to my students mastering primary academic skills, they will learn self-management.

"Tell me and I forget; teach me and I remember; involve me and I learn." ~Benjamin Franklin

Academically, it is extremely important to provide the preschool students with the core learning skills that they need prior to entering kindergarten.
