Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I want all of my students to think of themselves as readers and writers. I want them to love to read and write.
I work hard to foster a passion for these subjects in my students and to create a safe learning environment where they will be able to grow in these subject areas.
My class has 29 students this year.
The majority of them are Latino and for many English is their second language. Our school provides free breakfast and lunch to all students. The parents of my students are hard workers and want the best for their children. Many of them work long hours trying to provide for their families.
I have a wide range of reading abilities in my class from a non-reader to several who are already reading on grade level for the end of second grade.
My goal is to meet each child where they are and to help them grow and develop as a reader and writer.
My Project
These exciting and engaging materials will help my students grow as readers and writers.
Many of these books were selected because they will support our Language Arts units such as Friendship, Our World, Our Country, Fairytales New and Old, and Dinosaurs. These amazing titles will be used in read-alouds and for students to read independently. I have also selected several big books to use in shared readings with the class.
Some of the books were chosen because of their popularity with my students. The Magic Tree House series and the Elephant and Piggie books are huge hits with my kids. In the past I have checked these books out from the public library and brought them into class to share with my students; it will be amazing to have these books my kids' finger tips all year long.
Other books were selected as mentor texts for writing or as a way to introduce a concept at the beginning of a writing lesson. The art books and insect collection will inspire writing projects.
These books and other materials will make a tremendous difference in our classroom by providing access to engaging materials that connect to our curriculum.
My students will hear, see, read, and write about these materials as they become competent and inspired readers and writers.
