We're a highly sought after neighborhood school that serves families from all types of backgrounds. We have students that wake up each day knowing they're loved and will be well cared for, and we have others who aren't so fortunate.
Our kids come in every shade of the human rainbow and embody all that is beautiful about childhood.
We have kids with learning and emotional disabilities, kids living in poverty, kids who are identified as gifted, kids we love. We meet each child where he or she is, and we support them as they grow into the individuals they are meant to be. They are special and unique individuals but not without their challenges.
My Project
Art and technology are powerful allies in our classroom. As we work our way through fourth grade we create daily. Whether we're writing a report on an ancient civilization, learning about geometric concepts through the lens of art appreciation and creation, or researching and reading about topics of interest, every day we create something new.
Fourth-grade creations cry out to be rendered in full color, and frankly, there are times when a black and white printout just won't do.
A student who has spent a great deal of time and effort to create a document should have the ability to add a color image into his or her work. Access to printers in our school is somewhat limited, and currently, there is no color printer for kids to use.
Not only would a color printer be great to enhance student work, but there are times when concepts are much clearer to students if there's some color coding involved. Studying a color image can help kids understand so much.
While my fourth graders are tech-savvy, they still create the old-fashioned way too, with paper, scissors, glue, markers, and paints. As we learn various art concepts we try them out in the classroom. We do not have a separate art room or art teacher, so a rolling cart to house art supplies that could be easily moved as needed would be a bonus. Stocking the cart with materials that we use often will eliminate the problem of not having enough supplies for a particular lesson.
