Creating Number Sense by Using Tens Frames

My Students

My sweet kindergarten students come to school each day and are very excited to play and learn. Many of my students come from families who struggle with poverty and are unable to provide their children with extras that could help supplement their learning. Several of my students have received food for the weekend and clothing from the school to ensure that they getting what we need.

I teach in a Title I elementary school that is located in central Virginia.

Approximately 60% of the students receive free or reduced lunch. My classroom is a safe place for these children to become life-long learners. Many students in my room come from non-traditional families who are doing the best they can. Despite the difficult circumstances that many of my kind-hearted students come from, they all know that I believe in them and that I expect them to strive for greatness. I push them to be the best student that they can be!

My Project

My students are working hard to build strong number sense skills. These tens frame boards will assist students in counting items using one to one correspondence. They will also learn how to quickly count a group of items without actually having to count them. The tens frames will assist students with learning how to solve addition and subtraction problems and will help them come up with different ways to represent numbers. Students love being able to manipulate items and to show what they know! Developing a strong number sense at an early age is important for students to do so they can be successful in math as they go through school.
