My Project

We are a Title 1 school located in a district that currently does not allocate any funds for art supplies for our dedicated art teacher. A significant portion of our student population lives below the poverty line, and many of their families face challenges in providing necessities such as clothing, food, and housing.

Given these circumstances, it is crucial that we seek external funding to support our art program.

We aim to provide our students with enriching artistic experiences without placing additional financial strain on their families. Your support will ensure that our students have access to essential art supplies, fostering creativity and self-expression in their educational journey.

Thank you for considering our request.

LEARNING OBJECTIVE:

Students will design and create authentic artifacts that accurately represent the cultural practices and daily life of specific Native American tribes in pre-colonial North Carolina. They will demonstrate an understanding of the materials, techniques, and cultural

significance behind these traditional crafts.

Overview:

Students will explore the sophisticated material cultures of Native American tribes in pre-colonial North Carolina, including the Cherokee, Catawba, and Tuscarora. These tribes developed techniques that utilized natural materials available in their environments,

such as wood, clay, plant fibers, stone, and animal materials. Artifacts served both practical and spiritual purposes, reflecting the tribes' deep connection to nature and community values. Different tribes exhibited distinct artistic styles and specialized

techniques influenced by their geographic locations and cultural traditions. The creation of tools, baskets, pottery, and other items required extensive knowledge passed down through generations.

Research and Creation Process:

Scaffolded questioning will include prompts such as:

"What materials would be available?"

"How would this tool be used daily?"

"What does this artifact tell us about the tribe's values?"
