My Project

As an Occupational Therapist for over 23 years, I work with students of all ages (3-21 years) with a variety of abilities and disabilities, including autism, ADHD, learning disabilities, physical and emotional disabilities. Many of them struggle with trauma that interferes with self-regulation and the use of effective coping strategies, which significantly interferes with educational performance and socialization.

Many of my students are from minority backgrounds, live in poverty and lack access to after-school support, social activities and physical activities.

Many of them also live in neighborhoods where access to safe parks and play areas are limited or non-existent, further reducing their ability to achieve regular movement outside of school, which is imperative for all of us, but most important for growing and developing bodies and minds. Teaching them tools for both physical and mental health and wellness, that they can without the need for costly physical tools or the need for large space is necessary for developing a healthy and robust future.

Each year I work with students on a 1:1 basis, as well as providing consultation to students throughout many of Nassau BOCES programs. In addition to providing therapeutic intervention and consultation with students, I provide consultation to teachers, teacher aids, support staff, therapists, administrators, and parents/guardians. I have the opportunity to reach my students not only during our sessions, but through all individuals who can provide a positive impact on their growth and development.

Breathe For Change Yoga and SEL certification will enhance my current practice, allowing me to use different intervention strategies to support my students and their physical, emotional, and educational needs. This advanced training will also allow me to train staff members and parents to help support their students with emotional, physical, and sensory challenges.
