Creating Literacy-Rich Classroom Centers

My students need a bookshelf, teaching charts and a rug so that they can feel comfortable interacting with literature in the classroom.

My Students

My young readers enjoy having the freedom to interact on an independent level with literature, but our classroom is lacking an area where students can interact with both literature and their fellow classmates on a meaningful level.

Students in my classroom come mainly from farming families.

Our school is located in a very rural area of New York, and as a result, 62% of the students in our school are living below the poverty level. They enjoy learning, but their favorite part of the school day is when they have time to independently interact with the multitude of literature at our disposal.

My Project

I have requested a book shelf for our classroom so that I can display literature relating to different topics being covered in class. It is important to integrate literature into all subject areas so that students can find a connection to the material that is meaningful to them. I also requested a rug so that our students have an area to meet and have meaningful discussions about the literature they are exposed to in our class. The magnetic comprehension charts will provide the learners in my classroom with opportunities to organize their thinking as they read. They will also help students focus their thinking to prepare for the NYS ELA Test. With these items added to our classroom resources, I will have an area of my classroom that is conducive to both large and small group instruction. After a mini-lesson directed at the whole class, I can meet with a small group at the reading table while other students work with literature from the shelf using the organizers on the rug.

For many of my students, the classroom is the only place where they have an opportunity to create meaningful experiences with literature.

Knowing how much they have to overcome in their personal lives, it is crucial that these students have a comfortable environment at school in which they can develop their literacy and, in turn, build confidence in themselves as learners.
