This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Our children are dreamers. They are eager and motivated to learn. They come from families who are hard-working, and they are teaching their children that same motivation for learning. Many of our families fall below the national poverty levels; some experiencing the situation of being homeless or are home insecure. In addition, English is a second language for the majority of our families or they are bilingual households.
Every child deserves a great start.
Our children deserve no less than great. Our children are getting ready for kindergarten, and it is our job to prepare them! Having the right materials and devices is a large part of preparing students for school success!
My Project
My students need materials to practice rhyming and letter sound recognition. The books, and will help my students to practice rhyming and letter sound recognition at home with their families. I have asked for a copy of both books for all of my students and a copy for the classroom.
Research has found that children who are familiar with nursery rhymes when they enter kindergarten often have an easier time learning to read (Scholastic, n.d).
Students in Michigan are struggling to read by third grade and I want my students to have all the tools to get there before third grade; rhyming is one of those tools. The more students practice rhyming, the easier the skills become. If my students can practice at school and at home, I believe they will be rhyming in time for Kindergarten.
What we know is that rhyming and alliteration skills develop around the same time in students. What that means to me is that both skills are important. I also know that when learning occurs both in the home and at school that children are much more likely to remember the skills and have been shown to progress further. I want to give my families as many opportunities to learn at home as I possibly can and I hope you will support my project and students.
