My students come from diverse backgrounds, they come from moments of joy and moments of trauma. They live and attend school in a low income neighborhood, and many of their families have had to move often, interrupting their school experiences. The focus of our classroom is literacy - building literacy skills so they can thrive in high school. This must start with reading - specially, a love for reading. My students deserve a diverse and varied collection of books that represent their identities, interests, and support them where they are in terms of reading levels.
When I first ask my students, at the beginning of the school year, how they feel about reading they often say they dislike it.
They share that they've never enjoyed a book: they get bored, they can't relate to the characters or the conflicts. They also share they they've never been given free choice - a voice in what they read. In our literacy development class my students have a voice in everything they read. They can start where they are, and build their literacy skills while reading books that they enjoy. I want them to find a love for reading. To do this, I need a classroom library full of diverse choices. I need my students to feel safe in our reading space, especially since so many of them read far below grade levels, and this causes anxiety and fear around reading in academic settings. Having book choices at all reading levels will help alleviate these triggers.
