My Students

"There are many little ways to enlarge your child's world. Love of books is the best of all." --Jacqueline Kennedy. In my years of teaching English language arts in an impoverished part of my town, this has proven true over and over.

Most students I get to teach do not even have one book in their homes.

My students endure lives filled with hardships ranging from poverty and mean streets to being far behind in reading skills. In my classes, I try to give each child an opportunity to fall in love with reading in my little classroom library and by facilitating learning reading skills within literature circles. The importance of literacy is often forgotten with most funding going to STEM classes so my students have very limited access to books and technology.

My Project

Teaching 6th grade in an urban school comes with its own set of challenges-lack of funding, low parental involvement, and students who have not been shown reading is fun.

Being able to take my students on a multi-media adventure using "Harry Potter and The Sorcerer's Stone" will show students how exciting reading can be.

With the other props and supplies, students will get to create art projects throughout the novel, recreating fun scenes from the book and bringing the story alive in our classroom. Each students will create a wand, design owls, mix potions and play quidditch while forging deeper connections to books.
