This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

As the music educator at Mark Twain Elementary School, I am continually inspired by the transformative power of music in the lives of my students. Twain serves a diverse student body with varying interests and talents, and we believe that every student deserves the opportunity to explore their creative potential. Our music program is a vital component of their education, fostering creativity, discipline, and collaboration. Music education is not just about learning to read rhythms, notes, and chords; it is about fostering a lifelong love of music, instilling confidence, and promoting personal growth. After learning about modern band, I immediately signed up for training. I was taught how to incorporate modern music to engage all learners in music that is relevant to their daily lives. I jumped in head first using all of the instruments available in my classroom. But after more than ten years of use, more than half of our guitars are falling apart or broken. I’ve repaired what I can, but most need to be replaced.

The addition of new guitars to our music program would be a transformative step towards continuing to expand Twain students' musical horizons.

Guitars are versatile instruments that appeal to a wide range of musical tastes and learning styles, and students from kindergarten through fourth grade look forward to playing them when they get to fifth grade. These instruments will not only enhance our ensemble performances but also provide opportunities for individual practice and experimentation.
