Creating Lifelong Learners Through Literature Studies

My students need a class set of the book, The Last of the Really Great Whangdoodles, for a literature study.

My Students

"It is not enough to simply teach children to read; we have to give them something worth reading. Something that will stretch their imaginations-something that will help them make sense of their own lives and encourage them to reach out toward people whose lives are quite different from their own." (Katherine Patterson) Access to literature studies will ignite students' love of reading and engage them in books to enrich their lives intellectually and emotionally. My goal is to create life-long readers by providing quality literary experiences for my students.

My third-grade classroom resides in a Title I school in Arizona.

The students come from a variety of socioeconomic backgrounds. My students thrive on rich literature experiences and they are motivated to read through access to quality literature. They enjoy collaborating with their peers on book discussions and projects. Furthermore, they are inspired to explore related books for future reading adventures.

Access to literature studies allows my students to experience authors and books to motivate them to read and develop a passion for reading. Through engaging literature, my students will be able to expand their understanding of a variety of genres, develop their imaginations, and discover a love for reading.

My Project

Giving children access to literature, such as The Last of the Really Great Whangdoodles, is important for their reading and academic success. My students will discover the magic of Whangdoodleland as they journey through the pages of this fanciful tale. My goal as an educator is to provide opportunities for my students to gain a love of reading and become lifelong readers.

Literature studies promote an interest in reading, provide a source for meaningful discussions, build comprehension skills, expand vocabulary, and improve reading fluency.

They also provide opportunities for students to respond to literature, relate to characters in the literature, and build an appreciation for other cultures. In addition, reading boosts creativity and improves writing skills for success in all academic areas.
