This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
The look in my students' eyes when they are conducting investigations brings so much joy to my heart. They are creative, kind, and ready to tackle any challenge that comes their way. They are scientists, mathematicians, and learners who desperately need materials so that they can build upon their experiences and create new experiences that will inform their learning in future grades. Students have expressed their longing to become community leaders in the future. They have made comments such as "When I become a famous basketball player I want to give scholarships to students who can't afford it" and "I can't wait until I'm older so I can be a teacher and make a change in the world!"
They will be the leaders of our nation who must have the same opportunities as their higher-income counterparts and be provided with the materials and tools they need so that they can become world changers.
Almost all of my students come from low-income households. Although this is the case they deserve high-quality materials. Our school values each student's unique contributions and works as a community to ensure that we are doing our best to provide rich experiences for our students.
My Project
My goal this year is to help students find books that they are passionate about and books that are at their "good fit" level. I devoted my summer to coding each and every book in my classroom library with their genres, author names, and reading levels so students can make more connections between themselves as readers and texts they enjoy reading. I want to continue this journey by developing a classroom library that meets the needs of ALL of the diverse learners in my class. I am a 4th-grade teacher, but my students reading abilities range from K to 5th grade.
My students will want to read if they ENJOY reading and they deserve the chance to discover their reading passions at a young age so they can do nothing but take their reading skills to new heights and develop their reading history by building their identity as readers.
Unfortunately, my students do not have the resources to purchase HIGH-INTEREST books, as the cost is ever-growing. I want to help students identify their favorite genres of books and favorite authors. This donation with help me create a space for students to discover who they are as readers and allow my students to SEE THEMSELVES AS READERS.
