My Students

My students are enrolled in my Language Arts 7 course due to reading fluency and comprehension struggles. These are often the kids who are not going to pick up a book on their own and need a little extra TLC to be a success. These are the students who make teachers wake up in the morning: hard workers, lovable, funny, and appreciative for every little piece of help.

It is important to find a book that is ENGAGING while in their reading ABILITIES.

Often times, students with lower reading levels read books that are below their interest levels. Students should have the chance to read high-interest books with topics that truly engage them.

My Project

Our students are surrounded by technology at every corner; why not let them experience them for themselves? Hot topics in my classroom seem to be current video game trends, how to level up in said games, and the use of social media in their personal lives. They are continuously showing me new apps, add-ons, and how to level up in the games they have talked me into trying. So why not try to GAMIFY my classroom while still building reading and writing skills?

Using books with virtual reality themes as mentor texts, students will be creating a virtual reality and writing a story line for a video game.

Students will be using book clubs to enter into worlds created by teen authors, and discuss with their groups different literature aspects of the novels. After completion of the novels, students will be working with our STEM teacher to create a virtual world using their coding programs available. Finally after the creation of their worlds, they will view their classmates and write a first person gaming experience as a video game reviewer.
