Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

Our 4th-grade class is collecting donations to create care kits for individuals experiencing homelessness in partnership with City Care Night Shelter, a vital resource in our community. We are requesting items such as new t-shirts, granola bars, HotHands warmers, ChapStick, toothbrushes, and other small essentials that can provide comfort and dignity to those in need. This project gives our students the opportunity to take action in a real and meaningful way, supporting a local nonprofit they have already learned about and supported in the past.

By participating in this project, students are learning to see the world through the eyes of another person—someone who may be facing circumstances very different from their own.

They are encouraged to consider what it would feel like to go without a warm place to sleep, a snack to eat, or basic hygiene items. This awareness fosters empathy and helps students begin to understand that compassion means noticing the needs of others and taking steps to meet those needs, even in small but impactful ways.

As a teacher, I can measure the success of this project not just by the number of items collected, but by the level of engagement, reflection, and ownership students show. When students ask thoughtful questions, express concern, or show enthusiasm about how they can help, it shows they are internalizing the values of compassion and service. These are the moments that demonstrate true learning—when students begin to act not out of obligation, but from the heart.
