My students live in a small, rural town in North Carolina. They attend a Title I school with approximately 500 students. Many of my students do not have access to academic resources and technology and have limited knowledge of the world around them.
My students are great kids who love to learn and experience new things.
Many of them live on farms and love playing in the woods. They frequently ask questions and are curious about new things. It is my goal as their teacher to inspire them, introduce them to new ideas, and give them a love for learning. My hope for them is that they will grow to be lifelong learners and achieve their goals.
My Project
My goal is to build a bigger classroom library that offers more choices for my students and to provide texts for them that they can read independently. Children need access to a variety of books that they can read independently to build their confidence as readers and to improve their reading skills. First grade is an important year in a child's life as this is the year they learn how to read. Our classroom needs both fiction and nonfiction texts at the beginning readers level to support the important growth the students will make.
Students who are first learning to read need access to books that fit their personal interests.
When students have a choice of what they want to read they have a higher interest in reading. For this reason, I have selected a variety of books on many different topics to ensure a high level of interest for my students. It is my hope that my students will be able to choose their own books and become strong, independent readers.
