This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Every year I always have a group of new students that have not had the exposure and practice of gaining strength and control of their fine motor skills. Some come in not knowing how to hold a pencil or marker and how to use scissors. Our current marker boards are scratched, old and falling apart!
Our school is a Title I school which is made up of low-income families.
Most of our families are made up of parents who unfortunately never entered and graduated from a University. Most of my students are made up of Second Language Learners and students with special needs. These students not only deal with the everyday challenges of learning the fundamentals of reading, writing, and arithmetic but also learning English as a second language. Many of my students don't have someone at home who speaks English making it that much harder to learn and master all of the standards that are required in Kindergarten. My students come with the energy and eagerness to learn and to create a life long love for school.
My Project
Through the use of wipe boards, markers, and erasers my students will have the opportunity to gain strength and control of their fine motor skills through the daily practice of writing their name, writing their numbers, spelling out words during dictation, and writing simple to complex sentences. They will also have the opportunity to draw pictures that represent the sound of the week and the freedom to express their creativity. Throughout the day they will use these materials during Independent Work Time, Small Groups, May Do Centers, Dictation, Math Time, and Arts.
My students will be so excited to have the multitude of opportunities to practice and improve on their writing and penmanship skills.
Kindergarten is the first huge exposure to the writing process and it is critical to get them started on the right foot! I want to help them to become life-long learners and to have a love of reading and writing. With the use of wipe boards I hope to see our future authors in motion.
