Creating Future Employees Through Cooperative Learning

My students need tables and chair-pockets so they can work in groups and have a place to store their belongings.

My Students

With all the state testing that elementary students are now subjected to, there isn't a lot of time for kids to work together in cooperative groups anymore. I teach 2nd grade in a suburb of Erie, Pennsylvania and we are expected to have our students ready to enter third grade with the skills needed to be prepared for state testing. Our school consistently scores in the top percentage of the state, but I do my best to allow my kiddos to work together as often as possible.

Being able to work cooperatively and problem solve are two traits that both US News and World Reports and Forbes magazines list as qualities businesses look for when hiring.

My students love being able to talk and work at the same time. They love sharing ideas and offering their opinions to each other. They would rather sit together in groups than in desks by themselves.

My Project

Cooperative learning produces greater student achievement than traditional learning methodologies (Slavin 1984). He found that 63% of the cooperative learning groups had an increase in achievement. Students who work individually must compete against their peers to gain praise or other forms of rewards and reinforcements. The ability to sit and work with a group of peers will allow primary students to gain the necessary experiences for socializing and collaborating with each other, analyzing and problem-solving, creating projects, explaining how they each found the answer, as well as foster a positive interdependence, so that they realize that each depend on one another.

By donating to our project you will allow my current and future students to gain the necessary skills that are so important all through life.

I am requesting tables and chair pockets, which slip over the back of chairs to store belongings, so my students can sit in groups of 5 or 6.

My goal is that students stop thinking "me, me, me" and begin to have the mindset of "WE..." I want my students to rely on each other throughout the day for educational experiences, as well as for social and emotional ones, which is the measure of a well-rounded child.

Slavin's research also found that students who work individually must compete against their peers to gain praise & other forms of rewards and reinforcements, and even then, there are only a few winners. Success of a few can mean failure for everyone else.

There are more winners in a cooperative team because all reap the benefits from the success of an achievement. Low achieving students tend to work harder when grouped with higher achieving students. There is competition among groups in cooperative learning. Some forms of group competition promote cohesiveness among group members and group spirit.
