My Students
Help students improve their reading skills by providing technology for our class.
My students are excited and motivated to learn and do their best.
They are enthusiastic and happy to be at school. While they are enthused about learning, some have hard lives outside of school.
I work at a school in a lower middle class neighborhood. Falcon Ridge is a diverse school, where about 40% of the students qualify for free and reduced price lunch. The parents and students in this area are passionate about student progress. Many of the parents and students are enthusiastic about reading achievement. Unfortunately many students get hung up on fluency and comprehension. The technology I wish to provide my students could change that achievement gap. Many of the families in the area cannot afford technology in their homes. Providing technology at school can open a new world of learning.
Many of my students love to read, but need a new avenue and strategy for improving their reading abilities. About a third of my class is frustrated when independent reading time comes up in class. These students need different learning opportunities, that I believe can be offered by technology.
My Project
My students will be using iPods, headphones, audiobooks and a physical copy of a book to read and listen to a book. During independent reading work, students will have an opportunity every day to read along on a physical book as they listen to a narrator read it.
Listening while reading will help them by listening to an expressive and fluent reader.
Not only will listening to a great reader help their own expression, but it will also help them to read more quickly when they read aloud or silently. When a learning reader follows along with a fluent reader, they are challenged to keep the pace of the reader. This helps the learning reader to practice a faster pace.
Students are more likely to enjoy reading with exposure to new books and genres. Help my class learn to love reading even more!
