"We have to continually be jumping off cliffs and developing our wings on the way down.” - Kurt Vonnegut.
Students need to be given the opportunity to create, invent, and become financially literate.
My students are excited to learn and love to create!
They are writing scripts, composing songs, and conducting science experiments. Now it is time for them to research inventions from the past, create a new invention, and learn about financial literacy and entrepreneurship. They attend a small, urban school where the concept of community is infused in everything that they do. They work together, mentor younger students, attend garden days, compost lunches, run on Fridays, sing in musicals, and care about their school environment as a team.
My Project
My students will research various inventions by reading and discussing an expository book together as well as other nonfiction texts about inventions. Studying these exemplar texts will lead into lessons of financial literacy. Using their understanding of financial literacy, they will work collaboratively on projects. The students will begin by interviewing other students in the school regarding their top wants and needs and compare them to wants and needs in other countries. Next, they will create or invent a product based on student need, demand, or their own personal expertise just as an entrepreneur would. Using a set budget, they will research what resources are needed to be purchased and what supplies they can use from the school. They will explore ideas on how to raise funds and seek out donations. They will advertise and explain their inventions to the school.
My students will learn about many inventions and how they were created through reading exemplar texts.
They will determine the wants and needs from other students at their school. They will create various products based on these needs, demands or through personal experience with a similar product, just as an entrepreneur would. They will learn about budgets, savings, profits, goals, and priorities. They will advertise their products and explain them visually during an Invention Convention.
