We are a small K-5 school filled with students who are wonderful to work with! They are a diverse group of students in terms of race, income, gender, and ability levels, all looking for a chance to be successful. I have students who work at high levels and love to be challenged, down to students who need that nudge.
Many of the students struggle with issues adults couldn't deal with, but still, find a way to come to school and participate in the learning process.
We are a family of learners, myself included. Every day is a new day of learning, loving, and respecting each other. We are an awesome community working hard at being the best that we can be!
My favorite part of the year is when it's time for the Global Read Aloud Project, one book connects the world. This year, the book is "Front Desk" by Kelly Yang. Each year, my kids sit with their books, completely engaged, while I read aloud. The diverse authors that have been chosen give them a birds eye view into other cultures.
This story is a wonderful way to not only engage our students, but to let them see the world through the eyes of a child whose culture is different than their own!
Oh, the discussions we have about the story we are reading! That's when you know it is not just words on a paper to them. That's when you know they have entered the story with you, letting it take them wherever it leads.
Every year, this journey with Global Read Aloud gives my students something they can hold onto, their own book, a great story, and the world to share their thoughts with!
