This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Imagine a dance class with over 40 students in a room that doesn't even provide you enough space to extend your arms to the side without hitting a peer. The reality is that the students don't have adequate space for creating dance. If the music could be moved outside; space would be endless.

My students live in a large urban environment with struggles such as gangs, lack of materials, and lack of parental involvement exist everyday.

Many of them are English learners and simply making it through the day at the school is a challenge. I have the joy of teaching them dance. It is subject where many of them have very little prior knowledge and regardless of their language, math, or reading skills they can be successful in my class. The opportunity to create movement, ideas, or dance that express their emotions and feelings around their daily struggles is extremely valuable and appreciated by the students. In a time where many academically challenged students are being forced to take a math or English elective, my school still provides the arts as a vessel to provide creativity and inspire the students to be in charge of their learning.

My Project

Having the requested speakers and batteries will allow my students to work in small groups for creating dance. Previously we have had one radio that had to be shared by all. Working in smaller groups allows students more opportunities to shine, have a louder voice, and make more of an impact on their movement. Having the speakers be battery operated will allow the students to take advantage of the wide open spaces outside that our campus provides. The dance classroom barely has enough room for the students to all move together, doing the same choreography. Imagine having ten different groups all stuck in that same space moving in different directions. Another joy of being able to take the sound outside the classroom are the possibilities of doing site improvisations. Why does dance just have to take place in between four walls? The students will be able to use inspiration from architecture or nature to inspire movement and choreography.

This project will help to strengthen my students' creative voices through small group learning, site inspired improvisation, and the opportunity to simply be able to "move" without the restrictions of a classroom and whole group learning.

These speakers will provide students with more time for dancing and creating versus sitting and waiting for their turn at the radio. More learning will occur and greater progress will be gained through access to music that travels!
