My students need the orange and white yarn, and the crochet hook to produce a pot holder that looks like a slice of orange.

My Students
Being in the Vietnamese Dual Language Program my students come from a diverse background. I have just as many students learning Vietnamese that are learning English. My students are very "hands-on" and want to learn everything they can!
Our school is very family and community oriented and welcomes all cultures and languages.
The students are very engaged in many cultural events within the school and evening hours.
The students enjoy having parents come and volunteer in many programs. One of the most important programs we have is the Watch Dog program. This program brings many fathers and father-figures to the school to help the teachers, librarians, and even the office if needed. Having a male figure within the school helps support children that have an absence in that area of their life.
My Project
Last year I was new at teaching crocheting to my class of English Language Learners. I was convinced that they would be able to socialize in their native language, while learning to expand in their learning of English.
Creating an environment of learning was easy and fun.
This year I was able to implement a concrete idea and have started teaching my students to crochet. The students are the ones teaching each other at this time. We are almost ready to mingle with the 3rd graders to crochet together as a community. Having a finished project provides the students with a sense of accomplishment and self confidence that continues into their academics.
I noticed that the more time I gave the students to crochet, the more test scores in reading and writing improved. Crocheting gives our brain a great workout and keeps us brain healthy!
