Creating Creative Kids: Using STEMbins and the Power of Choice!
My students need STEM supplies like Legos, Magnetic Blocks, MathLink Cubes, Base-Ten Blocks, and Play-Doh to increase their choice, motivation, inquiry, and creative thinking skills and the storage units to organize them!
"Work hard and be nice" has become our third grade mantra this year, and my students live up to it every day! We love reading, coding, competing, helping, and building! They are kind and persistent, always working to become the best version of themselves. Our classroom uses flexible seating, math and reading rotations, self-paced online social studies, and hands-on science. We regularly self-reflect and work to make our class and school a better place!
Our rural Title I school has a great group of students, over 50% of whom receive free or reduced price meal plans.
Many students take home food packs on the weekend to help make ends meet. Many do not have access to internet, technology, or educational supplies at home. This, however, never stops or slows any one of them. They are hard working, kind, helpful, inquisitive, and determined.
My students especially love hands-on learning and creating, which is why I am determined to create a Maker-Space for our room!
These materials for STEM choices will provide creative thinking, science, technology, engineering, and math opportunities for my students daily. I will incorporate them into morning and early-finisher choice time. Research shows that student choice plays a critical role in promoting their intrinsic motivation and active engagement (Evans & Boucher, 2015).
My cart includes LEGOS, Magnetic Blocks, Play-Doh, Unifix Cubes, Base Ten Blocks, and storage units to organize them in our classroom maker space.
A maker space is a section of the classroom built to foster the mindset of creating something out of nothing and exploring your own interests. These spaces are also helping to prepare critical 21st century skills in the fields of science, technology, engineering and math (STEM). They provide hands on learning, help with critical thinking skills and even boost self-confidence.
I have already purchased MakerMats, Maker Math, and STEM challenges for our maker space, but we need more supplies so that multiple students may use them at the same time. We also need reusable supplies such as these so that we are not wasting one-time-use materials.
