Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Have you ever had to move to a new place where you couldn’t speak the language, much less read or write it? Well, many of my students have and despite, this, they are still expected to be “proficient” learners of our state standards and perform accordingly on high stakes assessments. I work in a small school with a very high underserved immigrant population just a short few miles from Miami International Airport.
Despite being in intermediate grade levels, my students struggle with phonics skills, and as such, reading and writing in English.
My students have the desire, motivation, and will to achieve and I’d like to provide them with creative tools that provide opportunities for creativity and the critical thinking they need to help them achieve success.
My Project
“Creating Crafty Readers” is a multi-faceted student project involving reading and creative writing. The main goal for this project is to provide students engaging and entertaining activities that will enhance their writing skills and deepen their understanding of main ideas and key details and demonstrate understanding of words and phrases in context. With the help of a Cricut Machine and new books, students will integrate their knowledge and ideas through visual craft projects such as scrapbooks, dioramas, lapbooks, and bookmarks.
The beauty of this project is that it is cross-curricular, allowing my students to make real connections with literature, social studies, science and even mathematics as well as generate authentic artifacts that demonstrate their knowledge and enhance their inventiveness.
Struggling learners will feel empowered to develop and express their ideas as well as boost their self-confidence.
