My Project
Something as simple as seating allows students to take charge of their learning. During independent work times and small group times, they can choose a location in the classroom that works for them. Currently, I have a pair of chairs and floor cushions in my room that students make a bee line toward to sit and engage with each other in academic discourse or just to socialize. The lack of variety of seating forces my students to choose to work in a variety of locations in the classroom such as at different tables, sitting under tables, or sitting or lying on a rug on the floor.
Making sure students are comfortable is an essential component in motivating them.
I have noticed amazing differences in my students when they are given a choice in their seating. They almost always make good choices about where they sit, are more engaged, and get more work completed than when they are just sitting at their desks. The arm chairs, side table, and rug will offer my students cozy corners for independent reading, collaborative discussion and quiet reflection.
