My Students

The new Common Core State Standards expect students to demonstrate critical thinking. Students analyze, discuss, evaluate, justify, and explain their thinking in all subject areas.

My students are extremely motivated by technology.

They attend a science, math, and technology magnet school. Most of my students have mastered the basic skills and are ready to take their thinking to a higher level. They excel when engaged in interesting and challenging projects.

My Project

Building consensus is an important part of our math lessons. After solving a problem, the students meet in teams to review not only their answers, but the strategies each person used. Students must learn to articulate their thinking and compare their work with the other team members. The materials from this project will be used during our daily math practice. Students will use the iPad minis as a digital whiteboard. They will use a screen-casting app to make mini movies of themselves solving math problems. They will use their finger to write on the screen and will narrate their thinking as they work. Other students will be able to watch the videos to see/hear the strategies used to solve the problem.

Building consensus is a challenging and complex skill.

The students benefit by learning from each other and developing their communication skills. These engaging materials will encourage even the most reluctant students to participate in team discussions about math strategies.
