This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

As a Mental Health Specialist, I model compassion through active listening without judgment, provide unconditional acceptance, validate students’ feelings, offer help and support, and ultimately aim to alleviate suffering. My goal is to create a ripple effect where students mirror this compassionate behavior in their own relationships.

My job is to help students learn about their feelings and teach them to begin thinking, “How does this also affect others and what can I do about it?”.

Creating a space for compassion to grow begins with modeling compassion through the atmosphere. Warm lighting creates a welcoming environment and including of visual and tactile sensory items such as sensory lights, liquid floor tiles, and lava lamps teaches teens that everyone regulates differently, which replaces judgment with empathy. When they notice struggling peers, they can offer tools to relieve their suffering, which is a direct, tangible act of compassion.

The most important aspect of creating a compassionate space is having interventions that teach students to see the world through the eyes of another person. The “We're Not Really Strangers" game is a self reflection activity that helps students become attuned to the inner world of themselves and others. While playing UNO, teens learn calming strategies to regulate their feelings of frustration, competitiveness, and disappointment which makes them more patience and willing to help others struggling with big emotions. UNO also requires anticipating what others might do and adjusting your strategy, which teaches students to think from another perspective and builds the habit of noticing others.

During my meetings with students I will continue to ask probing questions to check for understanding, play games to develop crucial perspective taking skills, and provide suggestions of ways students can continue spreading compassion to ensure they are adequately implementing empathetic acts of services in their everyday life.
