Creating Comfort: A Lounge Space for Students to be Themselves

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
Comfortable seating can lead to larger changes in my classroom. My classroom is a special place in the school. Not only is it used to house special classes (15:1), but also it is used as the Social Emotional Lounge.
For my students, especially students with disabilities, school can feel discouraging and stressful- changing that dynamic begins simply with feeling comfortable in a classroom.
Having flexible seating, like these bean bags, allows students to be comfortable while they work and learn. Additionally, they will be different than seating options in other classrooms which can allow students to separate their negative experiences in school and focus on creating positive new ones.
Comfort is a major component to learning and success. Students who are comfortable in a classroom are willing to take risks, learn from mistakes, and feel more motivated to succeed.
Further, flexible seating allows students to be accountable for their choices. They will be able to chose which seats will work well for them. Beyond comfort, this will help them develop responsibility skills and soft skills. Soft skills such as improving attention span and peer relations have also been known to improve with flexible seating.
Lastly, since this space is used also as a lounge, students come in during their lunches to eat, relax, and have fun. This is a safe space for all students to be themselves. They dance, sing, watch movies, practice homework, and build relationships with one another. It is one of the few spaces in the school that is open to students during their lunches and it has become quite popular this year. Durable, comfortable chairs will bring even more students in and allow for students who may normally be in the hallways, to have a structured safe space to enjoy spending time in.
