My Project

Even after returning to in-person learning a year and a half ago, our school still feels the impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic. My freshmen students have struggled to transition to high school this year, and I suspect that is because they were not in school during the year that would have been critical to learning the social and emotional skills necessary for success in school. I have been trying to incorporate more art, discussion, and social-emotional learning in my English Language Arts classes this year, but I know that I could still do more.

Our students are craving hands-on experiences that will help them to feel connected, not only with one another, but with their larger community.

This project is an extension of my earlier project requesting copies of the book "One Truth, No Lie," which my students have nearly finished reading. The book's main character, Zader, is an artist who began painting murals to raise awareness for ocean conservation after he discovered his biological family's special connection to the ocean. I want my students to follow in Zader's footsteps and learn to see how visual art (in addition to the literature we read in class) can be used to effect societal changes. For our culminating project this year, students will get to choose a social issue they care about, and they will write about ways to address that issue. Then, we will choose one issue to focus on as a class and base our large canvas paintings around that theme. English Language Arts classes are sometimes very cerebral and without many opportunities for hands-on learning. This painting project will be a great way to bring the literature to life and allow my students to connect to our class on a different level.
