Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Students at my school come to us from the surrounding low SES neighborhood. Many of my students face multiple challenges growing up in this neighborhood. They hear gun shots at night, have watched fights break out in their apartment complexes, and have had their parents robbed at gunpoint. Students face eviction, gangs, and dilapidated housing.
Despite all of this, many of students work hard and seek out opportunities that will change their lives.
The go the extra mile, attending tutorials, creating projects, and helping younger students at our school. This project will support them further in their efforts and prepare them for high school and college in the future.
My Project
The books and journals will be used by my students to complete a large scale project during their 8th grade year. Students will be researching and creating their own service projects to address a need they see in their community and/or the world.
The book "Be A Changemaker," will provide my students with inspiration and practical steps to start changing the world around them.
The book guides students through the process of brainstorming their concerns and then enacting a plan to address them. Students will study this book throughout the year while completing activities in their own journal.
We will start the year working together on the book study, but it is my hope that as students find their own passions and interests, this project will offer them a chance to have a truly individualized educational experience.
