Help me give my students items such as bean bag chairs and Legos to create an environment which they can build communication, collaboration, critical thinking and creativity skills that will give them advantages in our technologically advancing world.
The school that I work at serves students in kindergarten through fifth grade, as well as a Young 5’s class. 89% of our student population qualifies for free or reduced lunch. Many of our students also receive services such as speech classes, special education classes and reading and math intervention tutoring.
As a media specialist, it is an honor to work with every student in our building.
My students visit the media center an average of twice a week for a total of 80 minutes. If you were to walk into my classroom, you would encounter students who are dedicated to learning and having fun. You would find future leaders such as authors writing, engineers building, teachers assisting classmates, managers trying to keep classmates on task, as well as students who have the potential to excel in many other careers.
What makes my students special is their love for learning. Whether they are dealing with personal issues or dealing with a lack of school supplies, when they enter my classroom they rely on me to provide them with the resources they need to be successful. They feel safe and comfortable -- and as a result, can focus on learning.
My Project
During the previous school year, I tried to incorporate learning centers, which the students loved. However, due to the lack of resources, center time was limited. Because our library days are limited to once a week, I would love to have the resources to set up a variety of centers to help them grow the confidence they need to develop 21st century skills.

Communication skills - Sharing ideas, asking questions and developing ideas with their group members
Creative Skills - Using a variety of media formats and resources to invent and create
Critical Thinking skills - Solving problems across varied subjects and disciplines
Examples include students using Play-Doh to create a character from a story that they write, then using a computer app called PlayDoh! touch that brings their character to life. They will be able to use technology apps like Voki, so we can build our very own digital book review library that allows students to express their views on different book titles.
