Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

We are focusing on social emotional learning (SEL) in our first grade this year and finding strategies to regulate big emotions. Many students in my classroom have had a challenging past two years and school is a place where they come to feel calm and safe and ready to learn.

We are creating several spaces in our classroom where students can choose to go when they need to: a peace corner to calm down, a challenge area for when they want to stimulate their brains, and a sensory table when they need physical touch to help them focus.

These materials will help to make each area somewhere that meets students' particular needs: art materials and soothing scents (as well as noise cancelling headphones for peace and quiet) when they need to feel calm; challenge workbooks and puzzles when they need a little extra work; and weighted blankets, stuffies, and kinetic materials to touch and build with when they are feeling overstimulated in the classroom. This last area is particularly important for students who have special needs in my class and those who are struggling with anxiety and overstimulation that gets in the way of their being able to focus at school.

Finally, this project includes some of the infrastructure that we need to support our SEL focus: timers, clipboards for doing work, and individual cubbies to organize students' materials. Gentle fairy lights will allow us to turn down our harsh classroom lighting to help little brains feel calm and ready to learn.
