I have been the elementary counselor at my school for 6 years. It has been amazing to watch the students grow and begin to implement the coping strategies I teach them. Some of our students have had unpredictability and change in their home lives. Some have had traumatic events occur at very young ages.
Our school is seen as a safe space for students with teachers and staff that are caring and consistent.
We want to help them to learn ways to handle strong emotions and build trusting relationships.
My Project
We are creating a calming room at our school. We would like to have a relaxing space where students can learn calming strategies, practice deep breathing, and engage in sensory experiences. The counselor and instructional aide in the room will guide students through coping strategies, help students process their emotions, and discuss ways to handle situations appropriately in the future. Calming tools help students focus on a sensory experience and bring their bodies and minds back to a calm state. The goal is to promote self-regulation skills to help students express emotions. Healthy emotional regulation is key to successful learning.
