This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

We are a D75 special education school located in the Bronx. Our students come to school with big emotions, sensory needs, and challenges with self-regulation that make learning difficult. When students feel overwhelmed, anxious, or overstimulated, their brains are not ready to focus, communicate, or engage in academic tasks. Before learning can happen, students need to feel calm, safe, and regulated.

A sensory room provides a structured, supportive space where students can reset their bodies and minds.

Through tools such as an activity mat, floor tiles, a beanbag chair and other items, students learn how to manage their emotions and sensory input in healthy ways. This is not a break from learning—it is a critical step that allows learning to happen.

Self-regulation is a foundational skill for academic success, especially for students with disabilities. When students can regulate their bodies, they are better able to:

- Focus and attend to instruction

- Communicate their needs appropriately

- Reduce behavioral escalations and anxiety

- Build independence and confidence

This project will directly support students with autism, sensory processing challenges, emotional regulation needs, and other disabilities. Your support will help create a space where every student has the tools they need to regulate, refocus, and learn. Thank you for helping my students access the learning environment they deserve.
