Creating Black Girl Magic with Positive Picture Books

Help me give my students positive picture books that project powerful black female characters!

FULLY FUNDED! Mrs. Taylor's classroom raised $598

My Students

Our students are Scholars. They are provided a safe space to take risks, be vulnerable, and develop a sense of childhood curiosity and wonder.

They are thirsty for knowledge, eager to please, and desperately want to be better at "school." We have worked so very hard to cultivate a strong culture of learning that I can honestly say that their drive for success is inspirational.

They have endless energy and enormous hearts!

Our Scholars are innocent, kindred spirits who deserve so much more than what our society has given them. For many of our students, their future relies solely on their experiences in our school. Regardless of the unthinkable barriers that our scholars experience outside of our four walls, they know that our belief in them will never waver.

My Project

If we want our black & brown students to fall in love with reading, they must be able to picture themselves in the stories, relate to the content, and be inspired by what they see! Most classroom libraries provide student access to the "classics" or "classroom sets" of read alouds that are meant to teach valuable comprehension skills. However, very few, if any, highlight black & brown characters! These kinds of books usually need to be individually selected for purchase and are rarely found in bulk orders. This puts minority students at a disadvantage.

REPRESENTATION MATTERS!

If my role is to spark a love of literature with my students, then this is a wonderful place for me to start. Please help me to provide access to high quality picture books that highlight positive, black female protagonists.
