This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
My students walk into our classroom every day curious, energetic and full of life. We start each day with compassion and forgiveness by giving compliments or positive affirmations about the day that is ahead of us.
I teach at a Title I school in Baltimore City where 100 percent of our students receive free breakfast and lunch.
Many of my students have experienced unimaginable hardships and trauma during the course of their short lives. For many, school is the only place where they are able to feel safe, have stability, and feel loved. Our school is a community school, and also runs a food pantry, an after school program, as well as G.E.D. and parenting classes to help support our families.
Despite so many hardships, my students are eager to learn and engage with their peers. Many of my students are eager to come to school and reluctant to leave. They want to be in school because they want to learn in an environment that promotes individuality and having a growth mindset.
My Project
We have been in a world that has been so focused on online platforms and technology for students to learn. Let's not forget that these are children who need balance and activity in their lives to keep them engaged. No child should be on a computer, tablet, phone, or game all day!
The materials that have been requested in this project support multimodal learning and the opportunity for my students to just be kids!
They need to be able to paint, build their motor skills with playdough, and jump ropes, a practice writing or drawing with sidewalk chalk. We need to remind them that there are still fun things left to do in a world that has changed so drastically for them. Many of my students only have these resources when they come to school. Home should also be a place where they are able to learn but also be healthy, creative, and active. It's never to early to learn that the key to life is balance.
