This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

My energetic class is well on their way to becoming avid readers, however our classroom library is missing one of the tools needed for long-term reading success: decodable books! Decodable books are simple books that are written for the beginning reader and contain the specific grapheme–phoneme correspondences students have learned.

Decodable texts offer students an opportunity to practice specific phonics skills that have been previously taught, such as segmenting and blending, to strengthen said skills, develop automaticity, above all else, boost confidence through independent reading success!

Decodable books encourage children to sound out words using decoding strategies rather than guessing from pictures or predicting from other cues. They can be introduced once beginning readers have learned some simple grapheme–phoneme correspondences and can blend from left to right.

These books will go to great use: being used both as independent practice and small group work with the reading teachers. It is very rare for my students to get to experience the joy of a fresh new book, and I know they would be forever grateful.
