Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Remember the first time you saw a piece of art that truly spoke to your heart?
My students are children who are Deaf & Hard of Hearing.
They are creative, inquisitive children who benefit from being able to express themselves in a visual way, be it with their hands, body or through visual arts. They all have stories to tell, and want to be seen and understood like any other child. They come from low income families who have limited resources to expose them to the arts and the value and magic of creating art that tells a story. Our school also has very limited art resources, which is why I'm asking for YOUR help.
My Project
My students will finally have the materials, such as acrylic paints, clay bodies & ceramic tools,to create visually stimulating pieces that are inspired by the masters. We will study Van Gogh, Monet, Pueblo Pottery, among others. Using what we've learned about how art and artists tell a story, the children will make art that tells the world THEIR story- in a visual way that is accessible to all viewers. They will make pottery pieces that have images and icons that share their view of the world. They will put paintbrush to canvas and create paintings inspired by nature, their view of the world and their cultural experiences. They will finally be able to share what they have to say.
My children live in a silent world where frustration abounds when they do not share a common language with the world (ASL).
By providing experiences with art and providing art materials, we are give a meaningful and powerful way of expressing themselves, sharing their thoughts and telling THEIR STORY. It will also empower these students in knowing that people are interested in looking at and understanding what they have to say in their art pieces.
