My students are my inspiration and purpose for being a teacher. My second grade students are the most inquisitive little individuals I have ever met. They are a unique bunch that are willing to help each other, teach each other, and argue with each other to better understand perspectives.
The students in my classroom come from various socioeconomic backgrounds, family configurations, learning styles, as well as different cultural and religious beliefs.
We all learn from these differences and build on them to create a successful community of learners.
My Project
In order to engage and connect students to literature, they need to be able to see themselves in their books. I am working with other teachers to create an inclusive library that will be set up in our common space.
We want students to be able to feel comfortable sharing their own stories as well as the stories from the library.
This library will encourage conversations between students from various classrooms, grade levels, ethnicity, socioeconomic status, family structures, religion, etc. We will use these books during literacy time to help our students see the value of diversity. Using books such as these will not only help our students strengthen their reading and language skills, but also better understand the world around them. Our students need to understand how important it is to value and respect each other and how diversity can strengthen our community.
The books that I have selected in this project reflect the diverse world we live in as well as the diversity range in my particular classroom this year. It has been a while since I have added so many wonderful books to my classroom library that I really wanted to be able to share them with more than just the 22 students in my room. These amazing books will help the students that share our common space to understand and to relate to their world.
